Disabled Athletes
NOTAN coaches have been involved in the delivery of ‘Sportive’, a project for developing disability athletes ages 14 and older, working within schools and colleges, helping to engage more disabled people into athletics.
An outcome of Sportive was for NOTAN, with support from North Tyneside Council, to establish a North East disability athletics group. In total 27 athletes signed up and 16 volunteers/coaches from NOTAN, and other North East Networks, trained once a month at Churchill Playing Fields with several athletes participating in regional and national championships.
In memory of North Tyneside Council’s Sports Development Officer – Disabled Athletics, and para-Olympian, Karen Lewis-Archer, the end of 2016, saw NOTAN apply for the opportunity to have 2 Racing Wheelchairs and Seated Throws Equipment by Wheelpower and England Athletics.
We were successful in our bid, and 2017 will see the roll-out of our planned Disabled Athletics Development Programme.
